Friday 16th December marked the final Tribalism for 2011 and also my one year anniversary for performing at the event. As always the air was electric, the drums were thunderous and the people were left wanting more.
After a long break, we got the band back together so to speak, for some more hot Djembe ryhthms at Tribalism August 2011. Held in St Kilda at the Tongue and Groove, we were loud and kept the pace cranking. It was a big turn out and a fun night as usual.
My group and I performed Baga Ginea. The other students performed their songs, the African Dancing girls did their thing, Sackey had a solo dance off and Ouaga owned it at the end of the night. Read more
Here is a video of my djembe class and I playing the West African Sinte Rhythm which originates from the city of Boke. It’s a funky tune. Hope you like it. The intro is missing and of course it sounds much better live, but it still shows off how fun the night was.
Well, I’ve been doing some African drumming classes recently…..The drum we use is the Djembe. I have a bad habit of calling it a bongo drum – which a djembe is not.
African drumming is something that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time now. I’ve had about four or five classes so far and I’m noticing myself get better and better every week. The teacher Jeremy is pretty cool and he makes it nice and easy to follow….Turns out I’m actually going to be performing live in front of an audience next Friday….a little bit scary but cool.
Anyway, if you’re like me and you’ve always thought you wanted to play drums, I highly recommend checking it out.
